Smartphone market set for biggest-ever decline in 2026 on memory price surge: Report

The smartphone industry is facing a problem. This industry is one of the markets for things people buy to use at home.. In 2026 it is going to have its worst year ever. A company that does research on markets called IDC says that the number of smartphones that will be sold will go down by 12.9 percent. This means that around 1.1 to 1.12 billion smartphones will be sold, which is the lowest number in more than ten years.

This is not just because people do not want to buy smartphones. The main reason is that the price of memory chips like DRAM and NAND flash memory has gone up a lot. These memory chips are very important for smartphones because they help store data and make apps and the operating system work properly. Without memory chips it becomes very expensive and hard to make smartphones.

This problem is part of a change in the technology industry, which is being driven by the fast growth of artificial intelligence or AI. AI uses an amount of memory chips.

To understand why the price of memory chips is affecting smartphones we need to know about the two types of memory used in phones.

1. DRAM is used for things like running apps multitasking and making the operating system work well. The more DRAM a phone has the faster it will work. For example budget phones usually have 4 to 6 GB of RAM while expensive phones can have up to 24 GB of RAM. As smartphones get more advanced they need RAM.

2. NAND flash memory is used to store things like photos, videos and apps. The amount of storage in a phone can vary, from 64 GB in budget phones to 1 TB in expensive phones. The need for storage is going up every year.

The main reason for the decline in the smartphone market is the shortage of memory chips and the increase in their price. The price of DRAM and NAND has gone up a lot making it more expensive to make smartphones. Some reports say that the price of memory chips has gone up by 40 to 60 percent or more in 2026.

The biggest reason for this problem is the growth of intelligence. AI systems like ChatGPT and Google Gemini need amounts of memory to work. This means that memory manufacturers are prioritizing AI companies over smartphone companies, which makes it hard for smartphone companies to get the memory chips they need.

The memory shortage is causing a problem in the smartphone industry. It is an example of when the demand for something is higher than the supply. The demand for memory chips has gone up because of the growth of AI, cloud computing and other technologies.. The supply of memory chips is limited which means that the price is going up.

The smartphone industry is going to be affected in a way. The number of smartphones that will be sold is going to go down from 1.26 billion in 2025 to 1.1 billion in 2026. This is the decline ever recorded. The average price of smartphones is also going to go up to around $523, which’s the highest ever.

The people who will be most affected by this problem are those who buy budget smartphones. The price of memory chips is making it hard for companies to make phones so they may stop making them altogether. This could affect people in countries like India, Africa and Southeast Asia where budget smartphonesre very popular.

The big companies in the smartphone industry like Apple and Samsung will be able to survive this problem because they have a lot of money and can absorb the costs.. Smaller companies may struggle and even go out of business.

The growth of intelligence is also affecting the type of smartphones that are being made. More and more smartphones are being made with AI features, which need a lot of memory to work. This means that the demand for memory chips is going to keep going up which will make the shortage even worse.

The smartphone industry is going to change in a way because of this problem. Companies may have to reduce the number of features in their phones or use cheaper memory chips to reduce costs. This could affect the quality of smartphones. Make them less attractive to buyers.

The memory shortage is not a problem for the smartphone industry. It is also affecting industries, like the PC industry because they also use memory chips. The entire electronics industry is being affected by this problem.

The reason why AI uses much memory is that it needs to store and process a lot of data. AI models are huge. Need hundreds of gigabytes of memory to work. This is why the demand for memory chips is going up fast.

The memory manufacturing industry is trying to increase production to meet the demand. It is not easy. Building memory factories takes years and costs billions of dollars. This means that the shortage of memory chips is going to last for a while.

The smartphone industry is going to go through a change because of this problem. Some companies may go out of business while others may merge with companies. The big companies will get even bigger and more powerful.

The regions that will be most affected by this problem are the ones that rely heavily on budget smartphones. These regions, like Africa and Southeast Asia may see a decline in the number of smartphones that are sold which could affect their growth.

The innovation in the smartphone industry may also slow down because of this problem. Companies may not be able to afford to invest in technologies and features which could make smartphones less attractive to buyers.

The memory shortage is a change in the industry and it is not going to go away soon. The cheap smartphone market may never come back. The industry will have to adapt to a new reality.

The recovery from this problem is going to take years. The IDC forecasts that the smartphone market will start to recover in 2027. It will take until 2028 for the market to fully recover.

The winners of this crisis will be the memory manufacturers, AI companies and premium smartphone brands. They will make money because of the high demand for memory chips and the growth of the AI industry.

The losers will be the budget phone manufacturers, consumers and developing markets. They will be affected by the prices and the lack of budget smartphones.

This crisis is unique because of the demand for memory chips from the AI industry and the limited supply of memory chips. It is a change in the industry and it will have a lasting impact on the smartphone market. The year 2026 will be remembered as the year, in smartphone history.

This crisis is a change in the technology industry. The technology industry is going through a change. Artificial Intelligence is changing the way things are made and delivered in the technology industry. Artificial Intelligence is also changing what is important, in the technology industry. The market might get a little better after 2027.. We might never see really cheap smartphones again. The technology industry and Artificial Intelligence are changing things.
