Now people are using good technology and strong telescopes to try to find the answer. The search for intelligence or SETI for short is a really big deal and a lot of people are working on it. They want to know if there are living things out there in the universe. The search, for SETI is one of the science projects ever. The world is talking about the alien search again. This search is the one in the world. It is now in its stage. The people in charge found about 100 signals. These signals are mysterious. This news has gotten everyones attention around the world. People are hopeful again that we might be close to finding out if we’re really alone. The alien search is trying to answer a question that people have been asking for a long time. The alien search is very important, to humanity.

Liquid water is an ingredient, for life as we know it. So when we look at all the galaxies the chance of life being there is very high.
The search for life is not just about finding simple things like bacteria. The SETI people are looking for life that is smart. Like civilizations that can make technology. This technology would be able to send out signals that we can detect, such as radio waves or laser pulses. A time ago people on Earth started sending out radio signals into space without even trying to. This was in the 1900s. Now these signals have traveled far away from our planet. Over 100 light-years away. They are making a bubble” of radio signals around the Earth. The search for life and the SETI people are trying to find signals like these, from other civilizations. So basically if there is a smart civilization out there with good equipment they might be able to find these signals and figure out that we have smart life here. The SETI people do the thing but the other way around: they listen for signals like that from other stars. SETI is trying to see if they can hear anything from star systems that sounds like it was made by intelligent life just like we are trying to send signals to other star systems to say that intelligent life exists here on our planet and that is what SETI is all about searching for signals, from other star systems.

Now we have around 100 signals left so researchers can take a look, at each signal. They will check these signals with people who watch the sky look at what happened in the past try to figure out what is going on in space and see if the signals are coming from something people made. The researchers will use these methods on each of the 100 signals to learn more about them.

The search for life SETI started officially in 1960 with something called Project Ozma. This project was led by an astronomer named Frank Drake. Frank Drake used a radio telescope to look at two stars that are close to us these stars are called Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. He was listening for any radio signals coming from these stars. Even though he did not find anything for sure this experiment showed that it is possible to search for life in a way. Since that time SETI has become an effort that involves universities and observatories from all around the world and people, from different countries are working together on SETI.
Radio waves are really important to the SETI people. This is because radio waves can travel a long way without losing much energy. They can also go through the dust that’s in space.
We use radio waves on Earth for lots of things. For example we use them to talk to each other watch television use radar and connect satellites.
It makes sense that other smart civilizations might use radio waves too especially when they are just starting out.
So the SETI people listen for radio signals that do not sound natural. They look for signals that’re on a very specific frequency or that repeat over and over or that have strange changes in them. They are looking for radio signals that sound like they were made by someone or something

The Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico is really something when it comes to the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence or SETI for short. I mean the Arecibo Observatory has been a part of SETI. The Arecibo Observatory was finished in 1963. For a time the Arecibo Observatory was the biggest radio telescope in the world with one big dish. This big dish at the Arecibo Observatory was 305 meters wide. It was built into a hole in the ground made of limestone. The Arecibo Observatory is so big that it can hear weak signals from really far away in space. The Arecibo Observatory is very good, at detecting these radio signals from deep space because of its size.
Arecibo was not just for searching for aliens. It was a place where scientists did a lot of things. They studied the stars and the planets and the air around the Earth. Arecibo helped find a kind of star called a binary pulsar. This star helped us learn about waves. Arecibo also looked at the planet Venus. Studied rocks that float around in space. It even kept an eye on things that could hurt the Earth.. People know Arecibo for looking for life outside of our planet. This is because Arecibo sent a message into space in 1974 called the Arecibo Message. Arecibo is really famous for this message and, for searching for life.
The Arecibo Message was a radio signal that people sent to a group of stars called M13, which is really far away from us about 25,000 light-years. This message had some things in it like math and what makes up human beings and our solar system. It was not really meant to get a response. More like a hello to the universe. The Arecibo Message showed that human beings want to say hello to the rest of the universe. The Arecibo Message is now a part of our culture when we think about searching for aliens it shows how much we want to learn and how curious we are, about the universe and the Arecibo Message.
The Arecibo telescope collected a lot of information over the years. As computers got better scientists were able to store and look at amounts of radio signals. One well known project that used Arecibo information was SETI@home, which started in 1999. This program let people around the world use their own computers at home to look at parts of the radio data, from Arecibo. Arecibo data was used to make this project very big. It helped people think about SETI. The Arecibo telescope and SETI@home became very famous. Lots of people learned about Arecibo and SETI.
The SETI@home project worked like this: it took the data from Arecibo and broke it down into small pieces. Then it sent these pieces to peoples computers. The computers looked for patterns in the data that might mean someone or something was sending a signal.
The SETI@home project looked at billions and billions of signals over time. Most of these signals were noise or came from things like stars or planets. Some signals were even caused by peoples technology on Earth.. Even though the SETI@home project did not find any signals from aliens it showed that a lot of people working together can do really big things. It also showed how big the search for aliens really is. The search, for aliens is a deal and the SETI@home project was a big part of it.

The one hundred mystery signals that are being looked at now come from an amount of data. These mystery signals were not picked by chance. They made it through rounds of checking and being looked at very closely. First the scientists got rid of the signals that were the same as the frequencies of satellites or things on the ground that send out signals. Then they ruled out the signals that acted like things, in space that we already know about like pulsars or quasars. What was left were some strange signals. The mystery signals that did not fit into the groups that we already know about. The mystery signals are really rare. That is why they are so interesting to look at.
The Arecibo data is really important because it goes back a time. The Arecibo observatory was working for 60 years so scientists can look at the Arecibo data from now and compare it to the old Arecibo records. This helps scientists figure out some important things, about the Arecibo data:
I wonder if we have seen this signal before. Have we ever noticed this signal in the past? This signal is really interesting. I am thinking about it. Does this signal happen a lot. Is it something new? I am trying to remember if I have seen this signal at any time.
Does the thing happen over and again in a predictable way? The pattern of the thing does it always happen the way?
Is the thing we are talking about linked to a region of the sky?
Repetition is really important. If you get a signal one time it is interesting. It is hard to know if it is real. If you get a signal, from the place over and over that is much more convincing. This is because it seems like the signal is coming from something that’s stable rather than just being random noise. Repetition makes the signal more believable like it is actually coming from something rather than just being a one-time thing.
The Arecibo collapse in 2020 was really sad for science. The Arecibo telescope had some problems with its structure so it had to be shut down. Then the huge platform of the Arecibo telescope fell into the dish. A lot of people were worried that this would be the end of a part of the search for extraterrestrial life or what we call the SETI program.. The good thing is that the work of the Arecibo telescope is still helping us today. We are still looking at all the information that the Arecibo telescope collected over the years. For example scientists are still trying to figure out what these one hundred mystery signals are. This just shows that the Arecibo telescope is still playing a role in the search, for aliens.
